57th Annual Makawao Parade
Honoring Tradition, Community & Legacy

June 28, 2025 | Grand Marshal: Kathleen Souza (DeCambra) | Community Honoree: Pukalani Superette
Upcountry Maui is full of pride and aloha this June as we celebrate the 57th Annual Makawao Parade—a cherished tradition that brings together paniolo heritage, community values, and island culture. This year, we are honored to recognize two beloved pillars of our community: Grand Marshal Kathleen Souza (DeCambra) and Community Honoree Pukalani Superette.
Grand Marshal 2025: Kathleen Souza (DeCambra)
Kathleen Souza has spent a lifetime embodying the heart and grit of the Maui paniolo. Born on Maui to Lawrence and Betty DeCambra, she was raised with a strong work ethic, a deep love for horses, and an unwavering connection to the land.
A proud graduate of Maui High School (Class of 1976), Kathleen has dedicated over 35 years to managing Wai Ulu Stables and raising award-winning Souza Aussies. Her legacy is deeply rooted in the rodeo community, where she has trained, broken, and ridden horses across generations. Alongside her late husband, Jimmy Souza, Kathleen worked tirelessly on the ranch, building not just a life, but a legacy.
Kathleen’s children—Misty Souza Wright and Rory Souza (owner of RS Bucking Bulls)—along with step-daughters Janine Souza Carroll and Brandy Souza McGregor, carry on the family’s western traditions. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—Bryson, Aleah, Royale, Rylee, Paisley, and Letitia—are active rodeo competitors, ensuring that Kathleen’s influence spans across generations.
As an honorary member of the Kaupakalua Roping Club, Kathleen has earned numerous buckles, championship titles, and the admiration of countless young riders whom she has mentored. She continues to compete and is already preparing for this year’s Rodeo Stampede.
Kathleen lives by these guiding words:
"Put God first and you will never be last."
We are proud to recognize Kathleen Souza as this year’s Grand Marshal, honoring a lifetime of dedication, mentorship, and paniolo spirit.
Community Honoree: Pukalani Superette ("Puk Sup")
Ask anyone in Upcountry Maui, and they’ll tell you—Pukalani Superette is more than just a store. Fondly called “Puk Sup”, it’s a community cornerstone that’s been keeping locals stocked, fed, and smiling for over 60 years.
Located at the bustling corner of Haleakala Highway and Makawao Avenue, Puk Sup serves as a one-stop shop for everything from fresh poke to friendly conversation. Whether you're a longtime regular or just making a quick stop during a scenic drive Upcountry, the energy here is unmistakably warm and welcoming.
Still going strong under the stewardship of Aric and Myles Nakashima, Pukalani Superette remains a family-owned, truly local business. The roots run deep: the Nakashima brothers’ grandparents, Takeo and Kome Tanizaki, came to Hawaiʻi from Japan to work on plantations. In 1927, after losing their Wailuku store to a fire, they opened a new shop in Pukalani—right next to the current location.
As one of Maui’s last true mom-and-pop establishments, Puk Sup is a rare gem in today’s world—committed to community, heritage, and a personal touch that keeps customers coming back for generations.
Join Us in Celebration
The Makawao Parade is more than just a procession of horses and floats—it’s a celebration of legacy, community, and aloha. We invite everyone to line the streets, cheer on the parade, and honor the incredible individuals and institutions that keep Upcountry Maui vibrant and connected.
Mahalo, Kathleen Souza and Pukalani Superette, for being the heartbeat of this year's celebration.
