They are all reasonably and competitively priced.  Most charge by the square foot. To get a standard sized bedroom cleaned would be approximately $200. 

Professional Carpet cleaners not only are more experienced and knowledgeable about carpets than you but their equipment is much stronger and more effective than your vacuum or the steam machine you can rent from the grocery store. 

The cleaning process involves spreading a solution of detergent over the carpet and working it into the fibers.  Then it is rinsed out by a powerful vacuum which pulls out all the grime as well. 

The professional equipment uses hot water which is more effective at pulling the grime out of the fibers.  Their vacuum is extremely powerful and can pull out more soot during the rinsing process. 

For your typical spring cleaning the rentable machines are a cheap and viable option.  Foodland rents them out for $35/day.
