Maui County Council Committee to Review Proposed Real Property Tax Exemption Reforms

The Maui County Council’s Special Committee on Real Property Tax Reform will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers to review proposed changes that could significantly affect homeowners and long-term rental property owners across the county.
The committee will consider Bill 142 (2025), legislation aimed at easing the property tax burden for residents by revising exemption filing deadlines and eligibility requirements. Lawmakers are also expected to discuss proposed amendments that would modify how and when exemptions take effect, as well as expand eligibility for long-term residents purchasing homes formerly used as short-term rentals.
The meeting comes as Maui continues to address housing affordability challenges, particularly in South and West Maui, where recent laws have phased out short-term rentals in apartment-zoned districts. Residents are encouraged to follow the discussion and stay informed on how these potential changes may impact their property tax obligations.
