I did have high aspirations for a busy Sunday with plans for a nice long run in the morning, but when I got up, I just didn’t feel like running. Unfortunately, it was another very VOGGY day on Maui. I could barely see the ocean.
So, most of the day was spent answering emails, checking Facebook, and watching some of The Masters Golf Tournament. Oh yeah, I mustn’t forget one of the longest naps I’ve taken in a long time…a little over an hour. I love my afternoon snoozes, but usually 10 to 20 minutes and I am ready to go again. I guess I needed the rest.
After getting up from my nap and making myself a smoothie, I was getting restless, so, of course, what did I do. You guessed right. I went down to Baldwin Beach late in the afternoon for a swim and hang out with friends.
While I was there, I met up with my good buddy, Paul Willems, who most people refer to as Doc Willems, because he is a chiropractor and nutritionalist. We talked about some of my recent back issues, the VOG, and diet. Paul is a staunch believer and proponent of Veganism.
I told him how at the beginning of the year, at the recommendation of my trainer, I had increased my protein level to 180 grams a day. For someone who ate just moderate amounts of chicken and fish, that was not an easy task.
He told me that many of the issues I’ve been having in recent months, lung and sinus congestion, are probably related to my recent over consumption of protein. I had always been of the belief that protein consumption was way overblown, and that we didn’t need that much to stay in good health, so it didn’t take much convincing to put me back on track.
Thank you Paul for your sage advice. I knew there was a reason why I felt compelled to head down to Baldwin late this afternoon.
Aloha,
Ken
