Today was one of those days where you just want to shut yourself up in a room with a good air filter and not stray outside. The VOG (Volcanic Fog) was covering the entire Island and was about as thick as it ever gets. I could barely see the ocean from my home in Pukalani. VOG emanates from The Big Island where continuous volcanic eruptions have been on going for about 30 years. When the trade-winds are blowing which they typically do 80% of time, our skies are clear and blue. Unfortunately, we had what is called a Kona condition, where the wind blows out of the South from Kona on The Big Island. When that happens, the entire State is affected by the VOG. Read more about VOG.
Well, regardless of the VOG, I really didn’t feel like shutting myself in my room all day, plus I had friend who was doing a book signing at the new Barnes & Noble bookstore in Lahaina, so off I went with my lovely partner of 45 years, Monique. It was nice to have her company on the hour long ride to Lahaina. We got there around 2 P.M. and had a nice chat with Bob and his wife Peggy. Bob was a Realtor® for 30 years, five of them on Maui, and decided to retire several years ago to move back to the mainland (Kansas) to be closer to his 2 grandchildren. He immediately took up writing and has now written 13 books in a Mystery/Comedy series called “Lady Justice” as well as several other books. He says he writes 7 to 8 hours a day….now that it what I call a passionate man.
Above, I am receiving the first book in his Lady Justice series, “Lady Justice Takes a C.R.A.P.”. C.R.A.P. is an acronymn for City Retiree Action Patrol. After reading so many favorable reviews, I am looking forward to reading all of Bob’s books in this series. For more about Bob, check out his website.
As I mentioned in my previous BLOG, weekly inspections on our REO Listings are essential, so as long as I was on the West side, I decided to inspect our listing at Honolua Ridge in Kapalua. We’d really love to sell this listing, so if you know anyone looking for a fabulous deal, please let us know.
My wife and I only rarely get to the West side, so we decided to go the beach. What better beach to go to than D.T. Fleming Park which was voted best beach in America in 2006. It had been probably over 20 years since I had been to this beach. It was much bigger than I remembered. We walked down to the far left side of the beach where people from the Ritz Carlton Hotel go. I wanted to get close to the rocks so I could go snorkeling. There was a bit of a shore break happening, but being experienced with the ocean, it was not a problem for me to get past the waves and return to shore unscathed. There was excellent visibility and I did see one humungous turtle swim close by me. Here are a couple of photos taken at the beach today.
Notice on the right side photo how you can barely make out Molokai in the distance. On a clear day without VOG, it would be easy to see. I don’t want to leave you with a bad impression of D.T. Fleming Beach Park, so be sure to check out these images.
Despite the VOG, it was a fun day cruising around the Island with Monique, and visiting a beach we rarely get to. Don’t know yet exactly what I am doing tomorrow other than hopefully going for a morning run and writing up an offer. Of course, at some point or another, you’ll probably find me beaching it again. Until tomorrow.
Aloha,
Ken
