Mayoral 2015 State Address

written byKen Smith

Maui County Mayor, Alan Arakawa made his 2015 State of the county address earlier this week.

Arakawa seemed pleased with the current state of the county describing it as “strong.”  This statement was backed up stating that property valuations are up and in turn the home real estate market is on the rebound.  He also drew attention to Maui’s tourism industry which has been setting records in terms of visitors and spending.

By the sounds of it we have some very exciting projects planned for 2015.  Two new water projects are in the works, one is an Iao Water Surface Treatment facility and the other a technology developed to find leaks in pipes without digging them up so that less water is lost in transit.

The road repair cycle has transitioned from a 50 year cycle to a 20-25 year cycle due to increased usage so we can be expecting a lot of road improvements.  Kokomo Road and Hansen Road are the first on the list to be repaved.

There are several new community parks in the planning stages including a huge 209 acre park off Kuihelani Highway which will be called the Central Maui Regional Park.  The County is also working to buy land for a 50 acre park in Napili.  The Upcountry Dog Park is scheduled to open this summer across from Eddie Tam.

Maui County is going digital! Soon you will be able to download the Maui County app, referred to as COM Connect (County of Maui Connect).  The app will allow you to report anything you feel the county needs be aware of such as potholes or code violations, by easily uploading a photo.
