REALTORS Association of Maui Launches KAKOU Program
A new homeownership education initiative supporting Maui buyers
Buying a home can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time buyers. To help Maui residents take that step with confidence, the REALTORS® Association of Maui (RAM) has partnered with the Hawaiʻi HomeOwnership Center (HHOC) to launch KĀKOU, a new homeownership education program created specifically for people who call Maui County home.
KĀKOU is modeled after HHOC’s successful Oʻahu-based HOPE program and offers something many buyers need most: long-term support. Participants receive lifetime access to first-time homebuyer education, one-on-one coaching, and guidance even after they purchase a home. Through RAM’s support, the program is now more affordable and accessible, ensuring cost is not a barrier for local families who want to explore homeownership.
“Having a safe and stable home is foundational to a thriving community,” said Reina Miyamoto, Executive Director of HHOC. “When residents are able to obtain a stable home, they can contribute more fully to their families, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Homeownership strengthens our local economy and builds communities one homeowner at a time.”
The name KĀKOU, which means “everyone” in Hawaiian, reflects the heart of the program. It is about inclusion, shared responsibility, and community. Participants can attend live virtual classes, complete self-paced online lessons, receive personalized coaching, and join post-purchase workshops that cover topics like homeowner insurance, renovation financing, and estate planning. According to HHOC, 65 percent of participants statewide go on to buy their first home.
RAM Board President Georgie Tamayose said the program reflects the association’s commitment to serving the community in meaningful ways, especially following the 2023 wildfires.
“Our community’s recovery will take time, and homeownership plays a key role in that journey,” Tamayose said. “KĀKOU helps bridge the gap between what families need to know and what they can achieve. HHOC gives them the tools, confidence, and long-term support to make informed decisions and reach that goal.”
She added that homeownership does not have to start big. “Even if it starts with a small condo, this program helps people realize that owning a home is achievable. As a local girl, I want to see our families stay on Maui, raise their keiki here, and build generational wealth.”
RAM Chief Executive Officer Malama Minn described the partnership as both a practical step and a reflection of RAM’s values.
“RAM supports the rebuilding of Maui, and this partnership takes us back to our roots by working toward a home for everyone,” Minn said. “When we help families become first-time homeowners, we strengthen our entire island community.”
Minn also shared that the meaning of kākou perfectly captures the spirit behind the initiative. “It is inclusive. It is about giving aloha before expecting anything in return. This is RAM’s way of showing aloha to Maui by helping local families put down roots and thrive.”
Since 2003, HHOC has helped more than 6,000 Hawaiʻi residents navigate the homebuying process. The nonprofit also provides foreclosure prevention and rental counseling services to promote housing stability across the state.
“Our REALTORS® are active members of the communities they serve,” Minn said. “Through this partnership, RAM is connecting REALTORS®, nonprofits, and local families through education that supports sustainable homeownership.”
Maui County residents who are interested in enrolling in KĀKOU can contact their REALTOR® to get started with a special discounted lifetime membership rate of just $10, made possible by RAM. More information is available at www.hihomeownership.org/
