Yesterday was the groundbreaking for the long awaited new West Maui Medical Facilitywhich will be located off of Honoapiilani Highway on 14.9 acres below Kaanapali Coffee Farms and is anticipated to be completed in late 2018. This will be the first new hospital built in Hawaii in 20 years and the first new hospital built on Maui in over 60 years.
The new facility will meet the needs of the approximate 65,000 people who live, work and visit West Maui at any given time. Providing access to immediate critical care can make the difference between life and death, especially for victims of a heart attack, stroke or trauma.
Dr. Arensdorf M.D. of Maui Memorial Center in Kahului says he often sees long delays in getting patients in from West Maui which can be life threatening. He also anticipates that the new West Maui facility will alleviate some of the overcrowding the emergency department at Maui Memorial often sees. One major hospital can no longer meet our island’s needs.
