Makila Nui is a protected area in Launiupoko featuring a wide variety of native plants, rock formations and beautiful open space. In 2007 with a partnership between the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust and West Maui Land, LLC a 223 acre area was officially protected. The main reason for this partnership was to protect a rare geologic feature called trachyte, and to preserve fragile native plants that could potentially be wiped out by widespread development. Though land can be purchased in the 223 acre protected site, the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust strives to educate landowners and share with them the need to diligently care for the area.
The benefit of living in the area of Launiupoko is the privacy and rural atmosphere. For those families who don’t want to be so close to the busyness of Lahaina but still within driving distance of the beach and other conveniences, then Makila Nui may be the perfect place to call home.
