Market Update
Maui county is considering placing a ban on certain chemicals found in sunscreens that have been found to be damaging to coral reefs. Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are active ingredients in most sunscreens because they act as broad spectrum UV absorbents.
Discussions are in progress to have these chemicals banned in Maui County. Arguments in favor of the ban point out that scientists have found that these chemicals can expose coral reefs to "bleaching" and negatively affect the endocrine system and development of fish. Toxicologists took samples from popular swimming and snorkeling spots around the island and found that the highest levels of Oxybenzone and Octinoxate in the water is a Black Point in Kaanapali.
Arguments opposed to the ban point out that Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are both nationally approved by the Food and Drug Administration as safe. Opposition to the ban fears that a ban such as this would be difficult to enforce. If the ban is approved it would be the first of its kind in the country.
Reef safe alternative sunscreens use zinc oxide as the active ingredient to block UV rays. Mama Kuleana is a local Maui brand producing zinc sunscreen.
