Market Update
The iconic Grand Wailea Resort is set to be sold April 17 to a New York based company, BRE Iconic Holdings. Reportedly the sale will close at $1.1 billion making it the second highest amount paid for a hotel in the United States.
When the 776 room resort was built in 1991 it was said to be the most expensive hotel ever built, costing $600 million to build. Hotel analysts called it a "fantasy mega resort" that would never succeed.
Today the world-renowned resort commands room rates ranging from $659/ night to $15,844/ night for the 3 bedroom, luxury penthouse. The distinctive features the Grand Wailea offers are the chapel on the oceanside lawn, water elevator, caves and a swim-up bar. There are also multiple pools, waterfalls, waterslides and Jacuzzi's. The Spa Grande is rated amongst the top 10 spas in the world by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.
Though the resort is currently undergoing a $30 million renovation to incorporate a more contemporary look the new owner will likely do a more detailed renovation.
Reports for the Hawaii Tourism Authority say Wailea is the hottest resort area in Hawaii. Wailea Hotels report the highest room revenues and highest occupancies of anywhere else in the state.

P.S. - An all electric battery powered Bus is doing a 3 day test run on Maui Bus Routes. If adapted by the Maui County department of Transportation the zero emission bus created by Proterra Catalyst could provide a cleaner mode of public transportation.
