As the community continues its long-term recovery journey, an important milestone is approaching for Lahaina fire survivors. Maui County officials are urgently encouraging displaced residents to apply for available single-family housing reconstruction and reimbursement programs ahead of an upcoming August 31, 2026 deadline.

In this week's update, we cover the essential details of these recovery initiatives and how they aim to bring families back home:

  • Available Rebuild Programs: While the popular first-time homebuyers initiative is now full, substantial federal funding remains open for both the single-family reconstruction program and the reimbursement program for homeowners who have already completed their rebuilds.

  • Flexible Design Options: The county’s Ho'okumu Hou program offers 12 distinct floor plans, ranging from 2-bedroom models to larger 4-bedroom layouts, designed to accommodate the needs of intergenerational households.

  • Funding Beyond Housing: Of the $1.6 billion federal disaster relief grant, significant allocations are also actively moving forward to fund 22 critical infrastructure projects—including the Lahaina Bypass extension—and multifamily affordable rental projects.

Community leaders are reminding residents that these funds are tied to strict federal timelines, making early application is vital to protecting the unique fabric of the West Maui community.
