Market Update
The State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism released data earlier this week that 45% of homes sold on Maui last year were to mainland or foreign buyers. Of the 2,576 homes sold in 2016 buyers from the mainland purchased 1,077 and foreigners purchased 71 homes.
The data shows that of all the Hawaiian Islands Maui had the highest percentage of mainland and foreign buyers last year. On Oahu 19% of buyers were from the U.S. mainland and on both Kauai and The Big Island 37% were from the mainland.
State Economist, Eugene Tian says, "Out-of-state investments make our housing demand very strong." Non-residents purchasing up a large portion of available housing has long been an issue here. Many people love Maui and want to be here.
