Market Update

1,275 rocks were returned to Haleakala National Park in 2017, that is more than 100 rocks a month!  The rocks that are mailed from around the world back to the park are often accompanied with a letter apologizing for taking the rock and attributing misfortunes to the taking of the rock.

Many of the letters with the returned rocks apologize to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes.  It is Native Hawaiian belief that all animals, plants and rocks have spiritual significance.  

Haleakala National Park representatives freeze the returned rocks for 1 month before putting them back outside in the gardens in front of the visitor center to ensure they are not inadvertently introducing foreign bacteria or disease.  Removing rocks or taking anything from the National Park is not only disrespectful but illegal.
