Last year Maui was voted the #1 island in Hawaii by Travel and Leisure readers. In 2016 TripAdvisor honored Maui as the #1 Island in the Travelers choice awards. We wanted to explore what set's Maui above all the other spectacular islands in the state and the world.
Maui's been called the "golden child of Hawaii" and the "archipelago's crown jewel." Here are some reasons from Life Travel Maui has become a favorite for world travelers beyond it's beautiful beaches and breathtaking sunsets.
1. Molokini, the moon shaped islet is one of the most famous snorkeling spots in Hawaii. It's known for thriving with sea turtles, monk seals and colorful corals.
2. The infamous road to Hana, known for its windy roads, bountiful waterfalls and breathtaking views.
3. The sunrise at Haleakala is so beautiful it's worth waking up at 3 am.
4. You can of course find white sand beaches but where else in the world can you find a red sand beach like the one is Hana or black sand such as the one found at Wainapanapa State park?
5. Maui's calm waters on the South and West Shores make it an idyllic location for humpback whales to come in the winter.
