Market Update
The 16 acres of sunflower fields planted by Pacific biodiesel along Kuihelani and Honoapiilani highway are in full bloom. These flowers that were planted in November will be ready for harvest in March.
The 14 acres that dazzled motorists along the highway last year have since been turned into 1,330 gallons of sunflower oil. Most of the oil is being used in cosmetic products at Maui Spas.
The spa at the Andaz was the first hotel to include this Maui grown oil in their massage services. Now the sunflower oils have their own beauty line of products, Kuleana Beauty. The new beauty line also has a reef-safe, SPF 30 sunscreen in the development stages.
Pacific Biodiesel also used last year's sunflower harvest to create food-grade sunflower oils which will hit the retail market as well as local restaurants this July. The rest of the oil went to biodiesel, the company's specialty.
This year since the beautiful flowers started blooming the county has put up "No Parking" signs along the highway as last year drivers stopping to take pictures with the flowers caused traffic jams.
