I am a big fan of saving money when it comes to home expenses and I found a great article from CNN Money about saving money on your homeowner's insurance.
This article features five steps to save big on homeowner's insurance.
One of the steps that I found to be the most interesting is to measure how much coverage you need. In the past, I've based my coverage level on my home's appraised value but that also includes land costs. Instead, we should base the coverage level on the replacement costs per square foot of the house. In Hawaii, the land value could represent more than half of the appraised value. Another step is to recheck the deductible and see if you are paying the highest deductible that you can afford to lower your premium. Also, bundling together your home and auto insurance can save you 5 to 15 %. Every little savings helps.
In local news, the attorney general is seeking applications from organizations that are interested in receiving funding to assist distressed homeowners in Hawaii. The Foreclosure Assistance Program was created from a mortgage foreclosure settlement between the State of Hawaii and Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, CitiGroup, and Ally Financial. The State of Hawaii received $7.9 million in direct funds from the settlement. Applications must be received by July 13th. Read more.
