Our team specializes in general sales. Normally, we do not do property management; however, we are frequently asked about rentals and we normally recommend that people check out listings on Craigslist, ask a property management company, or view ads in the Maui News.
Today's rental market on Maui is very limited and if a rental is priced well, there are a ton of prospective tenants filling out applications for the same property. If a property is priced too low then it might be a scam.
Number one rule is that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. We've noticed that sometimes a scammer will use property photos of a listed property online and pretend that they are the landlords renting that unit.
Since Craigslist is a popular site to look at rental housing availability on Maui, we want you to learn how to avoid Craigslist scams.
Here are some more tips from Craigslist about avoiding scams.
- Deal locally with folks you can meet in person.
- Never wire transfer funds via Western Union or Moneygram
- Fake cashier checks and money orders are common.
- Craigslist is not involved in any transaction.
- Avoid deals involving shipping or escrow services.
- Do not rent housing or purchase goods sign unseen.
- Do not submit to credit or backgrounds checks until you have met the landlord in person.
