Hawaii Department of Health requires cesspool phaseout by 2050 to protect drinking water. The Nano Membrane toilet developed by Cranefield University is a new toilet technology being promoted as a cesspool replacement. This futuristic toilet will be able to treat human waste on-site without external energy or water.
The Nano Membrane toilet is backed by billionaire, Bill Gates. It may be a relatively inexpensive way to address the 1,000's of cesspools still in use, many of which are Upcountry. The cost of converting a cesspool to a septic system on Maui is roughly $20K. The new Nano Membrane toilet costs only $700 -$1,000 resulting in a huge cost savings and environmental benefit.
The new toilets use chemicals to transform waste into fertilizer. At an expo earlier this month Bill Gates said, "the waste does not smell or carry disease." More test projects need to be done before this technology can be approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
