Today is King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii. Kamehameha the Great was the monarch of Hawaii between 1782 and 1819. He is well-know for uniting and establishing the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. Every June 11, Kamehameha Day is held in his honor.
Since this is a state holiday, most county and state offices are closed.

P.S. - Did you know that the term "shaka" is not even a Hawaiian word? It's attributed to a used car pitchman, David Espinda who ended his TV commercials in the 1960s with a shaka sign and said, "shaka, brah". The shaka gesture actually dates back to the early 1900s.
