2022 Conservation Law Protects Hawaii's Sharks
The original inhabitants of Hawaii lived in harmony with the land and the sea and all creatures, big and small. Tiger sharks, or nuihi, as they are called in Hawaiian, were no exception, and often thought of as family gods, or ‘aumakua. World-wide, sharks are under attack by human predators, despite their crucial role in aquatic ecosystems. Last session, Hawaii state legislators put into law a ban prohibiting the killing of sharks in state marine waters. This new law, effective as of Jan 1st, 2022, protects all sharks that reside or migrate in Hawaiian waters. Check out this article to learn more.
