Market Update
According to the Census Bureau data, for the first time in a decade, more new households chose to buy a home rather than rent one in the first quarter of 2017. Interestingly, about 854,000 new households purchased a home and only 365,000 new households chose to rent. New homeowners have not outpaced new renters since the 3rd quarter of 2006.
Economists say that an increase in new homeowners could signal a turnaround in the long-term decline of the overall homeownership rate.
Take a look at our market watch table below which shows that there is a decrease in active inventory this week in all sectors on Maui. We are beginning to see more young people deciding to become homeowners versus renting here on Maui due to the high price of our rental market.
