What happens to your online presence after you die, Facebook, Gmail, Dropbox, Twitter and other accounts? There have been numerous court cases where next of kin have been locked out of such accounts and the corporations refuse to give them access passwords because it would breach their terms of service. This raises the question, do the next of kin have a right to this personal information?
This data is now referred to as "digital remains." Third party user corporations are now coming up with options for their deceased users and their next of kin. Facebook has the option to memorialize an account, where the account remains exactly as it was, essentially frozen in time.
There is also the concept of a digital heir, or as Facebook calls it a "legacy contract," in which you may nominate someone to manage your accounts in the case of your death. This is certainly a vital feature for people who use social media for their businesses.
