Throughout Hawaii lots of local shops, restaurants and businesses offer a kama'aina discount. The discounts vary by store but are extended to Kama'aina, which literally translates from Hawaiian to "child of the land." The term refers to Hawaii residents regardless of their racial background so some visitors try to pass as kama'aina to get the discounts. Though often times this leads to them sounding silly, if you can't pronounce the word or other very common Hawaiian words properly it's unlikely you will receive the discounts.
The Hawaiian alphabet consists of 13 letters, 8 consonants and 5 vowels. Two features of the Hawaiian alphabet that are different from the English alphabet are the kahako and the 'okina. The kahako is indicated with a horizontal line over a vowel that signifies a long vowel. A vowel with a kahako should be given two beats of sound rather than just one. The 'okina is the eighth consonant in the Hawaiian alphabet, it signifies a glottal stop and is indicated with a single open quote mark or vertical line.
Below are some rules of thumb for pronouncing Hawaiian words.
- There are no silent letters in Hawaiian, all letters are sounded.
- Vowels are sounded separately except when there are 2 vowels next to each other, then the sound is blended together.
- Stress the next to the last sound of a word.

P.S. - Reports from the Realtor's association of Maui show the median price for a single family home increased to $744,223. That's up $105,000 from the same time last year. Inventory of homes for sale remains low with a decrease of 13% for homes.
