Market Update
Friday is a state holiday where all public schools, state and county offices will be closed in observation of Statehood Day. This year Statehood day will be observed on August 17th, annually it falls on the third Friday in August. Statehood Day commemorates the day Hawaii became a state in 1959.
It was August 21, 1959 when President Eisenhower signed the proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state in the Union. The holiday formerly known as Admissions Day has no official celebrations held. The day is mostly celebrated silently. There is a fair amount of debate surrounding this holiday as the history surrounding Hawaii becoming a state can be a controversial matter.
Outside of Hawaii, the rest of the United States of America celebrates the third Friday in August as "Hawaiian Shirt Day."
