Growing Interest in Visitor Volunteerism

Whether you live on Maui full-time, snow-bird in the Winter months or plan to come on a short-term vacation, you may wish to learn more about Malama Aina opportunities to participate in. There are several organizations practicing land stewardship that aim to revitalize cultural awareness and care of our beautiful islands.
In its simplest form, Malama Aina means to care for the land correctly; it is a cultural practice or demonstration of aloha which is available to all. For many visitors to Hawaii, there’s a growing interest to volunteer while visiting as a way to give back and connect with this spirit of aloha. We’ve put together a short list of organizations as a guide. You can also learn more about the idea of voluntourism by reading this article from the Maui Magazine.
Mission Statement: To cultivate cultural and environmental connectivity for all.
Volunteer Days: Wed and Thurs 730-1130am. Sign up on-line.
Mission Statement: To stabilize, protect and restore Hawaiian cultural resources.
Is a citizen science network whose mission is to collect water quality data because the quality of water = the quality of all life.
Year-round opportunities like sea turtle watch and other projects at the The Hawaii Wildlife Discovery Center on Maui.
Mission Statement: To protect and steward the lands that sustain Hawaii, and to perpetuate Hawaiian values by connecting people with the aina.
Programs to connect visitors to numerous local charities and environmental groups. The Ritz Carlton Kapalua and the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea encourage guests to volunteer in exchange for a fourth or fifth night free.
