According to the Maui News, 1 in 7 adults smoke in Hawaii. Although lawmakers killed proposals raising the legal age for buying tobacco to 21; they are clamping down on smoking at beaches statewide. Read more.
Smoking bans took effect on January 1st, making it illegal to have a cigarette at all Honolulu beaches, parks, pools, and athletic facilities -- including tennis courts. Read more.
Lawmakers are currently advancing bills to restrict smoking and make it more expensive.
House Bill 2577 that confines smoking in public housing to designated areas at least 25 feet from the building has already been passed by the House. This bill was created to prevent people and children from inhaling 2nd hand smoke.
The Senate passed SB2222 that prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol. Senate Bill 2495 would regulate and tax electronic smoking devices much the same as tobacco. It would also restrict the use of those devices in the workplace and in public.
Have a wonderful week.
