Bill 9’s First Reading to Follow Council Vacancy Appointment
Aloha!
Maui County Council Chair Alice L. Lee announced that the first reading of Bill 9, CD1 (2025) — a proposal to phase out transient vacation rentals in Apartment Districts — is expected to be scheduled for a council meeting in December. The council’s immediate focus, however, is on filling the vacancy left by the passing of Council Member Tasha Kama.
Originally recommended for passage by the Housing and Land Use Committee earlier this year under Kama’s leadership, Bill 9 received approval as to form and legality from the Department of the Corporation Counsel in October. Chair Lee emphasized the importance of patience during this transition, noting that the council aims to carefully appoint a new member and allow time for adjustment before proceeding with major legislative actions.
A special council meeting will be held today at 9 a.m. to discuss procedures for the replacement process. While public testimony will be accepted, discussions will not include potential successors.
