Market Update
Last week Governor Ige signed Senate Bill 3095 making Hawaii the first state in the Nation to ban pesticides containing chlorpyrifos. The ban will not going into full effect until 2023. Beginning January 1, 2019 users of pesticides with this chemical will need to obtain a temporary permit and report annually to the Department of Agriculture until the complete ban takes effect in 2023.
The chemical chlorpyrifos has been linked to developmental delays and learning disabilities in children. In 2015 the Environmental Protection Agency recommended that pesticides using this chemical be banned from all food crops. It is awesome to see Hawaii leading the way in the ban of this dangerous chemical.
The bill also prohibits use of chlorpyrifos within a 100-foot buffer zone around schools during the interim period before the ban takes full effect in 2023. Governor Ige adds, the state's agriculture industry is very important and as such they are working with the Department of Agriculture and the University of Hawaii to find safe, alternative pest management tools.
