What if Saturday's missile alert was real? The false alarm has gotten many Hawaii residents wondering what would happen if it was real and what is the best plan of action in such an emergency situation?
If a missile was headed for Hawaii, US satellites would detect it's launch immediately and calculate the estimated path and target point. The US Pacific Command would then quickly decide it's threat level and if they would shoot the missile down. Then the public would be alerted via attack warning sirens, cell phones and media. After the public is alerted to the threat everyone has 12-15 minutes to find immediate shelter before the missile impact.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) says the most important thing to do is get inside, stay inside and stay tuned in to the radio or television. Since there are currently no community designated fallout shelters in Hawaii it is recommended if possible to take shelter in a windowless room. Upon impact do not look at the flash of light, it can damage your eyes.
HI-EMA advises everyone has an emergency supply kit and a family emergency plan. Basic emergency supply kits should have be stored in easy to carry plastic containers and contain the essentials, food for 14 days, water, change of clothes, batteries and first aid.
