Market Update


ATTOM Data Solutions (a real estate data firm that's the parent company of RealtyTrac), released its 2017 Rental Affordabilty Report which shows that buying a home is still more affordable than renting in 66 % of U.S. housing markets analyzed.

The report compared the monthly house payment of a median priced home - including mortgage, property taxes, and insurance versus the fair market rent of a three bedroom property in 540 counties.

The least affordable rental market requiring the highest percentage of average wages to pay fair market rent was Marin County, California (77.3 %).  Honolulu, HI came in 4th at 70.7 % and Maui County, HI came in a close 5th at 70.7 %.

The most affordable rental markets came from Huntsville, AL (23.9 %) and Pittsburg, PA (24.4 %).

Low interest rates have helped the affordabilty factor of purchasing a home, but they are expected to rise in the near future. 

According to the report, rents have been surging faster than the home prices in about 27 % of the markets measured.
