Market Update
As we move forward into this new year, 2019, we wanted to take this opportunity to have a look back at the past year in review. The Hawaiian Islands saw 6 powerful hurricanes in 2018. Maui was most affected by Hurricanes Lane and Olivia which caused flooding and severe weather island wide. West Maui also suffered brush fires fueled by strong winds during Hurricane Lane.
Maui also experienced 2 other brush fires in 2018. On July 3rd, 2,500 acres of fallow sugar cane burned between Haleakala Highway and Pulehu Road, heading toward Pukalani. The Olowalu brush fire burned 200 acres and 30 homes were destroyed.
Kilauea, the only active volcano in Hawaii erupted for 4 months bringing dramatic changes to the landscape of the East side of the Big island. A very memorable moment of 2018 was the false missile alert issued by the Hawaii Emergency Management Authority.
Maui's own, Billy Kemper won the Jaws Challenge at Pe'ahi during monstrous waves at the legendary surf spot.
In February 2018, 1.5 inches of snow fell at the 9,000 foot elevation of Haleakala, locals and visitors flocked to the summit to build snowmen and enjoy the novelty, winter weather.
