Market Update

The excitement was building for the launch of the traveler pre-testing program on August 1st. But sadly, as COVID-19 case numbers begin to surge exponentially both on the mainland and in Hawaii, Governor David Ige has opted to postpone the program launch until September 1st.

Instead, Governor Ige has decided to continue on with the 14-day quarantine protocol that has been in effect since the beginning of the pandemic. This announcement has resulted in yet another blow for local businesses that rely on Maui’s thriving tourism industry to survive. Many businesses have already had to close permanently due to a lack of new visitors, and unreliable revenue.

The mayors from all four counties in Hawaii have put pressure on Governor Ige to delay the rollout of the program, because the states from which many people travel to Hawaii are experiencing massive surges in new cases. When asked about his thoughts, Ige had this to say, “This was not an easy decision to make. It really was a choice between two difficult options,”.
