Mayor Alan Arakawa is on the lookout for a few good farmers to grow food crops on leased or purchased parcels of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar's 36,000 acres that could potentially sit barren at the end of the year.
Ideally 2-3 separate groups of farmers could lease or purchase a lot of 500 acres or more from Alexander & Baldwin and grow various vegetable or food crops. This would help Maui towards its goal of self-sufficiency as 80% of our food is imported.
The county is referring serious interested farmers who have a business plan that shows a return on investment for leased land directly to A&B. Interested farmers are encouraged to act quickly so that mechanics, electricians and other specialized farm workers from HC&S can be placed with them before they find jobs elsewhere.
The long term goal regarding the future of these lands is to achieve greater food and energy self-sufficiency and preserve agricultural lands.
