Market Update
Millennials, also known as Generation Y are the demographic age group ranging from approximately 14-34 years old. As housing becomes more affordable why aren't we seeing many first time home buyers from this generation?
With interest rates historically low the conditions seem right for first time home buyers but it is high rent rates that plague millennials. They tend to favor housing markets where home prices are still very high compared to wages. Markets like Honolulu, Austin, New York and San Diego. With the majority of millennials being renters in these markets CNBC calls housing a "millennial mismatch."
It is difficult for millennials to save money for a down payment when on average their rent is 30% of their income. Millennial renters say they do plan to buy a home someday but expect to be renters for the next three years.
