Happy Holidays from The Smith Team! We are feeling the extra Winter cheer this year as near freezing temperatures combined with incoming showers produced "freezing rain" at the top of Haleakala over the past weekend. The Haleakala National Park had to close for the day due to unsafe, icy road conditions.
Although temperatures at the summit were below freezing, there was no snow. High temperatures were at 37 degrees at the visitor center and 39 degrees at the summit with winds 10-15 mph and a 50% chance of rain. Visitors are asked to dress appropriately and use caution when entering the Haleakala National Park.
Meanwhile atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island a total snow accumulation of 12 -24 inches is expected.
