More on Maui County Proposed Short Term Rental Ban
 
There is no shortage of controversy and differences of opinion when it comes to the Maui County Proposed Short Term Rental ban.
 
Our new RAM President, Lynette Pendergast, has expressed her feelings with which we heartily concur.
 
"I am deeply concerned by recent reports of threats directed at our staff and past president due to the Association’s position on the County’s proposed legislation to eliminate more than 7,000 short-term vacation rentals to provide more long-term housing for residents. Such behavior is unacceptable and will not be condoned under any circumstances. It is crucial that we engage in respectful dialogue and work together constructively.  
 
Our position on the proposed legislation remains clear:

 

“The REALTORS® Association of Maui recognizes the fundamental importance of private property rights in fostering economic prosperity, individual freedoms, and community well-being. Our mission to protect property rights and promote fair housing is guided by our vision of a home for everyone. The freedom to buy, sell, and utilize property, as protected in the Fifth Amendment, underlies all real estate transactions and markets.

 

We understand the intent of the proposed bill is to generate long-term housing for our residents. We support the creation of safe and affordable housing. We are concerned that the proposed bill poses unintended consequences that may hurt our Maui community including but not limited to the promise of affordable rentals or ownership options. We ask that the Mayor and Council take a step back, collect and analyze data and determine potential repercussions before proceeding with this impactful legislation.”
