Market Update
Maui Mayor, Alan Arakawa delivered his State of the County Address last night, describing the Maui County as being in a state of "perpetual change." Maui County has the fastest population growth rate in the state with an estimated more than 163,000 people living here in 2014.
The mayor spoke about how he plans to address homelessness in the coming year by purchasing state-of-the-art emergency housing units that could accommodate hundreds of people. These are modernly designed living units that would provide a person with the support, privacy and dignity they need to transition back into society.
There was also much discussion about the close of The Hawaii Cane and Sugar Company and how the community would be affected. The Sugar Operators Work Assistance Task Force has been formed to assist the more than 650 workers who will be displaced by the shutdown. As for what will be done with all the remaining land, there is much debate but the mayor encouraged vegetable farmers to contact his office as a viable option.
