Historical and Current Mortgage Rate Trends
Due to the Covid pandemic, interest rates in 2020 and 2021 fell to record lows below 3%. Since then, interest rates have been climbing at a very fast pace to help combat inflation. For the first time in a decade, the 30 year fixed rates have tipped over 5% in April. Despite all this, the interest rates are still much lower than the historical average. According to the historical data provided by Freddie Mac, between April 1971 and April 2022, the average 30 year fixed rate is at 7.78%. So, even though the rates are a little over 5% at the moment, it is still lower than the historical average. See below chart.
