Facility Improvements at Waianapanapa State Park Begin July 6
For travelers planning the legendary drive along the Road to Hana, a visit to the brilliant black sands of Waianapanapa State Park is often a highlight of the journey. However, if you have a trip planned for this summer or fall, you will need to account for upcoming construction and partial closures.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks has announced that a major facility improvements project is scheduled to begin on July 6, 2026.
The project aims to modernize the park's aging infrastructure while managing the heavy foot traffic this iconic destination receives. Fortunately, the park will remain open to visitors during construction, though certain high-traffic areas will be temporarily impacted.
What to Expect: Closures and Timelines
The improvement project is structured in phases to minimize disruptions, but visitors should prepare for altered access to parking and restrooms.
- Main Parking Lot Closure: The main parking lot will be fully closed from July 6 through August 14, 2026. During this six-week window, all visitor parking will be redirected to the park's overflow lot.
- Restroom Closures: The comfort station located near the main parking lot will also be closed during this initial phase. To accommodate guests, portable toilets and handwashing stations will be available nearby.
- The Good News: The park's famous black sand beach, coastal hiking trails, and scenic lookouts will remain entirely open and accessible throughout the construction period.
Reminder: The Reservation System is Still in Effect
As a reminder for anyone planning a drive to East Maui, Waianapanapa State Park requires advance reservations for all non-Hawaii residents. This management system was implemented to curb overcrowding, protect the delicate coastal ecosystem, and improve the overall experience for visitors and local residents alike.
- Reservations: Non-residents must secure both a vehicle entry permit and individual pedestrian passes ahead of time.
- Planning Ahead: Because parking capacity will be reduced during the overflow lot redirection, booking your timed entry slot well in advance is more critical than ever this summer. Reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance.
The Long-Term Value of Infrastructure Upgrades
While construction delays can be a temporary inconvenience, these structural updates are vital for preserving Maui’s most sensitive natural resources. Investing in durable facilities ensures that the island can balance a thriving visitor industry with the preservation of the rural, pristine charm that makes places like Hana so special.
